The Principality

The beauty of Monaco

Seven centuries of sovereignty, pressed into two square kilometres of the most beautiful coastline on earth. This is the first impression, long before the first whistle.

Seven Centuries on the Rock

For more than seven hundred years, the House of Grimaldi has reigned over this improbable jewel of the Mediterranean. In 1297, François Grimaldi seized the fortress on the Rock disguised as a monk, the two sword-bearing friars still emblazoned on Monaco's coat of arms. Genoese by origin, sovereign by will, the Principality endures as one of Europe's oldest ruling dynasties, today led by HSH Prince Albert II.

Barely two square kilometres pressed between the Maritime Alps and the sea, Monaco rises in tiers of pastel façades, palm-lined terraces and Belle Époque grandeur. From the medieval lanes of Monaco-Ville atop the Rock, to the yacht-filled basin of Port Hercule, the casino gardens of Monte-Carlo and the sculpted seafront of Fontvieille and Larvotto, every metre is a view worth framing.

The most densely glamorous address on the planet, and the beating heart of the Riviera's high season.

  • Great for groups, safe, elegant and social.

Without Betting a Cent

  • Take the daytime guided tour of the historic gaming rooms.
  • A drink at the bar or terrace overlooking the square.

Prince's Palace & the Old Town

The Rock · Cradle of the Grimaldis

Perched on "The Rock", old Monaco is a warren of medieval lanes barely changed in centuries. The original fortress was raised by the Genoese in 1215 before the Grimaldi dynasty seized the Rock in 1297, legend has it François Grimaldi slipped in disguised as a monk, the very sword-bearing friars still on Monaco's coat of arms.

Tour the State Apartments of the Palais Princier and catch the Changing of the Guard by the Prince's Carabiniers, daily at exactly 11:55 am. Nearby, Saint Nicholas Cathedral (1875) holds the tombs of the princely line.

The Oceanographic Museum

Founded 1910 · The "Explorer Prince"

Carved into the cliff face and rising 85 metres above the Mediterranean, this "temple of the sea" was founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I, a devoted oceanographer. Its monumental façade towers over the water like the prow of a ship.

Inside: vast aquariums, a shark lagoon, over 6,000 specimens and the story of undersea exploration, the legendary Jacques Cousteau served as its director from 1957 to 1988. The rooftop terrace offers one of the finest views in the whole Principality.

A must for families and the curious alike, science, splendour and breathtaking views.

The Grimaldi Forum

Contemporary Culture · On the Seafront

Opened in 2000, this ultra-modern cultural and exhibition centre, partly built out over the sea, is the beating heart of Monaco's artistic life. Its programme changes through the year: major art retrospectives, photography and fashion exhibitions, ballet and opera.

It is also the stage for landmark events such as Monte-Carlo Fashion Week and many of the season's galas. A place where today's Monaco converses with the greatest names in world culture.

Always check what's showing, the exhibitions rival those of the world's great capitals.

A History Lesson

The story of the Stade Louis II

A feat of engineering reclaimed from the sea, and the only stadium in the entire Principality.

The first Stade Louis II opened in 1939, already the home of AS Monaco, and is named after Louis II, the Sovereign Prince of Monaco at the time. In 1979, Prince Rainier III resolved to give the Principality an entirely new sports complex in the Fontvieille district.

Entrusted to Parisian architects, work began in May 1981 and finished in 1984. It demanded 120,000 m³ of concrete, 9,000 tonnes of iron and 2,000 tonnes of steel structure, all on land reclaimed from the sea. Prince Rainier III inaugurated the stadium on 25 January 1985.

Instantly recognisable by its nine arches, the stadium hides most of its facilities underground: the Gaston-Médecin multi-sports arena, the Prince Albert II aquatic centre, a vast car park beneath the pitch, and the International University of Monaco. It has hosted the Herculis Diamond League athletics meeting since 1987 and staged the UEFA Super Cup from 1998 to 2012.
